Department Description:

The Department of Environmental Science is an academic department of the College of Environmental Sciences in Chwarta, which belongs to Sulaimani University. The department is committed to promoting environmental sustainability and addressing environmental challenges facing the region and the world. This department consists of four years of academic study in environmental science, and the program of the Environmental Sciences Department follows the Bologna Process. Students in this department will receive bachelor’s degrees in environmental science after completing 4 years of study; they will become experts in environmental science. This department currently has third-year academic students.

The department aims to be a leading and renowned department for producing graduates, postgraduates, and researchers through value-based quality education with innovative means and collaborative interdisciplinary approaches who can address current and evolving environmental challenges for self-reliance, sustenance, and the betterment of society.

Department Mission:

The department of Environmental Sciences in the College of Natural Sciences of Sulaimani University works to provide modern, vocational, and scientific education in terms of quantity and quality at the level of the needs of the Kurdistan labor market, both in the public and private sectors. It also works on environmental protection as a culture in the community. First, to develop, nurture, and empower the students to reach their full potential and cope with the environmental challenges of achieving sustainable development. Second, to adopt state-of-the-art technologies to optimize teaching and research to enhance the young generations’ knowledge, skills, and entrepreneurship. Finally, to be recognized as an excellent center in educating and training students and teachers to provide solutions to environmental and climatic issues through innovative approaches.

Learning Outcomes at Department:

Based on the subjects taught in the Department of Environmental Science, students will achieve the following outcomes:

  • Students can generally learn about basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, geology, and computers.
  • Students can learn the basics of teaching scientific and academic English writing and express themselves through environmental reports and research on contemporary environmental issues.
  • Students will become familiar with all environmental problems and how to solve them based on environmental laws and common solutions, and will be able to conduct environmental impact assessments.
  • Students can specialize in monitoring the private and public sectors investment projects.
  • Students can work in environmental media, ecotourism, and environmental culture and gain expertise in these fields in order to serve the community.
  • Students can conduct environmental research to solve environmental problems, learn new ways to produce renewable energy, and work as environmental engineers.

Finally, the graduates of the department of Environmental Science will be fully competent in all sciences related to the environment, ecosystems, biodiversity, remote sensing, and GIS, including environmental laws, environmental impact, assessment, and sciences related to water, air, soil, plants, and organisms.
