Symposium on Monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals through Earth Observation

On November 5, 2023, the College of Environmental Sciences at Sulaimani University, in collaboration with the University of Southampton, UK, under the representative of Dr. Sarchil Qader, held symposium under the title (Exploring the Use of Earth Observation and Geospatial Information to Monitor the SDGs and Complement Traditional Data)
The event opened by Vice President(Dr. Zana Mahmood Hassan) He elucidated the importance of the College of Environmental Sciences and clarified its significance in achieving sustainable development goals. Following this, Dr. Emad Omer Ham-Ali, the Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, expounded introduction of the “Theme and Importance of Earth Observation and Geospatial Information in Achieving the SDGs”.
Symposium structure which comprised two key components, the first part featured a scientific article delving into the topic of “The Role of Earth Observation and Geospatial Information in Monitoring the SDGs: Current Status and Future Directions”. While the second part engaged in a comprehensive panel discussion on the “Challenges and Opportunities in Integrating Earth Observation and Geospatial Information for SDG Monitoring”.

Panel Discussion participants were:
1)Barham Khawarham Fars, Head of IT Department at Sulaimani Governorate:”Application of GIS in Urban Planning for Sulaimani City”.
2)Jutyar Khalid Qader, Deputy General Director of General Directors of Agriculture in Sulaimani:”GIS and sustainable farming practices”.
3)Ari Faeq Hassan, Director of Sulaimani Irrigation Directorate:”The significance of GIS for monitoring and managing water resources”
4)Sarchil Qader, University of Southampton, UK:”Does the KRG and local government have access to the sufficient data to address the current environmental issues?”
