On June 27, 2024, the University of Sulaimani hosted a workshop for a delegation from the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources, led by Dr. Wissam Khalif Obied, along with representatives from the World Food Program (WFP). Asst. Prof. Dr. Zana Mahmood welcomed the attendees.
The College of Environmental Sciences, as part of the technical team, conducted a seminar during the workshop, which was overseen by the Projects Office of the University of Sulaimani and held in the College of Engineering. The seminar introduced the constructed wetland project at the University of Sulaimani, focusing on using plants to treat wastewater. The university’s technical team for Subsurface Constructed Wetland led the event, highlighting the project’s benefits. Attendees, including WFP representatives, praised it as a “Center of Excellence” for natural water treatment.
Discussions emphasized the advantages of constructed wetlands: sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and global recognition for land regeneration, combating desertification, and enhancing drought resistance.
