On 28 April 2025, the Environmental Sciences College participated in a multi-stakeholder meeting aimed at supporting the protection of Goizha Mountain in Sulaymaniyah. The meeting, organized by the Civil Development Organization (CDO) and supervised by Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Qubad Talabani, brought together representatives from government institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector to discuss the draft Goizha Mountain Conservation Plan.
The college team—Assist Prof. Dr. Emad Omer (Dean of the College), Dr. Zhino Khalid (Head of the Environmental Science Department), and Ms. Razan Omar (Deputy Head of the Environmental Science Department)—actively contributed to the working group discussions. Their input emphasized the integration of IoT systems, modern environmental monitoring technologies, and public awareness strategies as essential tools for fire prevention and ecosystem protection. These efforts reflect the college’s commitment to scientific consultancy and environmental responsibility.
This contribution aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably:
-
SDG 13: Climate Action, through proactive strategies to reduce wildfire risks and build environmental resilience;
-
SDG 15: Life on Land, by supporting the conservation of natural mountain ecosystems;
-
SDG 4: Quality Education, by promoting community awareness and student engagement in real-world environmental planning;
-
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration with governmental bodies, NGOs, and the private sector in developing joint conservation strategies.
The Environmental Sciences College reaffirms its role in advancing research, innovation, and community collaboration for sustainable environmental stewardship, particularly in preserving natural landmarks like Goizha Mountain.
